조와 마음을 확인하는 레니, 집에 돌아가서 뜻밖의 토비와 첫 삼자대면.

and then to my surprise he doesn’t kiss me but wraps his arms around me instead.

놀랍게도 입술 대신, 두 팔이 다가와 나를 감싸 안았다.

 

“What?” I ask, embarrassed how much I still want his arms around me.

"뭐야?" 내심 즐기던 품이 떨어져 나가자 나는 민망해서 물었다.

 

“I think you’ve had enough freak-outs for one day,”

“하긴 오늘 하루 식겁한 일이 좀 많았야지.”

 

“A dare? Next windy day then.”

“어쭈? 바람 심한 날에 다시 오자, 그럼.”

 

I consider staging another freak-out and running back into the woods so I don’t have to be in a room with Toby and Joe, but I am not the actress and know I couldn’t pull it off.

토비와 조와 한 공간에 있을 필요가 없도록 또 한 번 경기를 일으키며 숲속으로 뛰어들까 고민했지만, 내가 여배우도 아니고 그런 상황을 연출할 수 있을 리 만무했다.

 

He watches us enter the room with an inappropriate hawkish intensity that is not lost on Joe and sends shivers through me.

토비는 거실에 들어서는 우리를 지나치게 이글거리는 눈으로 주시했고 그 눈길이 그대로 조에게 꽂혀들자 나는 전신이 오싹했다.

 

Meanwhile, I am now imagining roots growing out of my feet so I don’t fly across the room into Toby’s arms, because I have a big problem: Even in this house, on this night, with all these people, with Joe Fabulous Fontaine, who is no longer acting like my brother, right beside me, I still feel this invisible rope pulling me across the room toward Toby and there doesn’t seem to be anything I can do about it.

그 와중에 나는 토비의 품으로 달려가지 않으려고 발바닥에 뿌리가 자라는 상상을 하고 있었다. 생각보다 문제가 심각했다. 지금 이 밤, 여기 이 집에, 이 모든 사람과, 그것도 바로 옆에 더는 날 여동생처럼 대하지 않는 환상적인 조 폰테인과 함께 있건만, 여전히 나는 어떤 보이지 않는 밧줄에 의해 토비 쪽으로 속수무책 끌려가는 것 같았다.

 

I turn to Joe, who looks like I’ve never seen him: unhappy, his body stiff with confusion, his gaze shifting from Toby to me and back again. It’s as if all the moments between Toby and me that never should have happened are spilling out of us in front of Joe.

겨우 고개를 돌리자, 조는 꼭 낯선 사람처럼 보였다. 언짢은 표정, 당혹감에 뻣뻣이 굳은 몸, 토비와 나를 번갈아 오가는 시선까지. 마치 토비와 나 사이에 일어나서는 안 됐을 모든 순간이 조의 눈앞에서 낱낱이 까발려지는 것 같았다.
